Thank you all. My immediate problem (I was being stupid) is solved. I was confusing the Username and Password for my VPN Client with the Username and Password to log in to the Sonicwall to administer it.
It's possible that port 1 was the factory default for admin access but port 2 was enabled by someone. Everything got connected to port 2 and worked perfectly. Reset happens admin access goes back to default port 1 and you can't get in. That may not be what's going on but it's definitely possible.

When logging in as a user with administrator rights (that is not the admin user) the User Login Status popup window is displayed. To go to the SonicWall user interface click Manage button. You will be prompted to enter your password again.
